How to Feel Empowered Throughout Your Job Search In my recent post, I discussed the relative complexity, confusion, and uncertainty of life after college. Much of this uncertainty stems from the inevitable career search, that hunt for stability and purpose. But job searches arent just for recent graduates. I didnt graduate yesterday; however, Ive scanned job boards and crafted tedious cover letters more frequently within the last decade than I care to admit. Many millennials and non-millennials find themselves turning again and again to the job search for a variety of reasons, even while theyre more or less gainfully employed. Unemployment rates may be hovering just below 4% in America right now, but this percentage doesnt really say anything about the emotional challenge of trying to wrangle out of unemployment. Its easy to forget your own power when trying to sell yourself in applications. If youre looking for your next job, pondering a career transition, or eyeing your first period of gainful employment with wary eyes, I have some words for you. It is possible to feel empowered as you search for employment, no matter how long that search lasts. Gather the right tools. Its vital to approach the job search as you would, well, a job itself. Most jobs require a certain set of tools for completion (a hammer and a wrench, a computer, a headset). The job hunt isnt excepted from this! In the past, job hunts have often involved a hefty amount of anxiety; I write cover letters in surges of confidence and despair. Accordingly, my job search tools include strategies for managing this anxiety. One tool in my toolkit involves making myself as comfortable as possible while applying. I brew a cup of my favorite tea, munch on some vegan brownies, put on my thick wool socks. Before I plunge into a resume revision or job board, I try some deep breathing. I set Spotify to a station that empowers or calms, whichever I need. Beyond this, there are other tools worth adding to your arsenal: a proper computer, most likely, with document formatting capabilities. For a while I was banging away at a Chromebook until I got lost in my endless pages of Google Docs. The tint of the screen also provoked headaches, compelling my valuable purchase of blue light reduction glasses. Know what platforms are available when it comes to postings, too. Try to look beyond Monster and Indeed, the go-tos for millennials. Browse postings on industry-specific sites or check out government positions at USA Jobs, for example. Some college alumni networks have job boards that cater to graduates. Yes, a shiny resume should be part of your toolkit, as well as knowledge about crafting a great cover letter. Remember: it is not shameful to be looking for a job! This is a stigma that society unfortunately perpetuates. Your connections may be able to put feelers out or chat with friends who know someone in need of a strong employee. Recognize all of your skills and your standards. Sometimes you may be pigeon-holing yourself into a certain industry without even realizing it. Ive definitely been guilty of this in the past. Take some time to assess all of the skills you bring to the table. Think outside the box here as much as possible, and try to disassociate skills from careers. This is a valuable strategy, as some skills are applicable to multiple industries. Its possible, for example, to get certified as a professional coder without a formal degree in coding. If you were an English major like myself, youre not eligible solely for teaching and writing positions (you may be eligible for design, management, translation, and even biomedical positions!). In addition to your skills, recognize your standards. Weve all heard about settling for a job as a gateway position. While sometimes these are unavoidable, it can be disempowering to take a position you know youll truly hate or one that undervalues you. Its okay to set standards for employment, even if it means extending the job search. Ive bounced in and out of the service industry, for example, out of sheer need. But once I realized how my time within this industry kept me from using some of my most vital skillsand also compromised my mental healthI knew I couldnt go back, even out of grueling necessity. Recognizing your own value as a prospective employeetruly determining your employment needs and the bounty you have to offercan simultaneously hone and empower your job search. Consider professional development. Sometimes an additional degree or certification can give you the boost you need in the application process, although it is possible to jump into an industry with little to no experience. Professional development can give that extra dose of confidence you need to pursue the career that is beckoning. Professional development does not have to mean going back to school. Its possible to register for a local colleges non-degree program, for example, or acquire a technical certification of some kind. You can even take an online class. You may also wish to reach out to individuals who currently have your dream job and ask them what they would recommend you pursue in order to qualify for similar positions. Meet disappointment with fervor. This can be the hardest aspect of job searching. I spent months receiving little to no response from applications, and I questioned my ability to become a component of the U.S. workforce. I received rejections with many a tear and many a scowl. Do your best to meet these rejections with the same fervor you instil in your applications themselves. Thank employers who send rejections (some dont even bother to do this), even if it hurts. Better yet, ask employers who have rejected you what they would recommend for a stronger application. Recgonize that a rejection merely indicates that that door was not the one to open to your greatest potential. After all, a wise person once said, We arrive at our YES through a series of NOs. Yes! Today is a new day to truly suck as a leader! Yet, somehow, your team believes that is exactly what you must be doing. Youre one of those kinds of bosses that they gripe about at happy hour. Youre the boss that they equate with Attila the Hun, Nurse Ratched and Dunder Mifflins Michael Scott. You may be discouraged that your team doesnthold you in high regard. It may make you angry. It may surprise you. But however youre feeling, you need to push it aside and figure out what has gone wrong. Because if you dont fix it, you can bet that your rotten leadership will eventually hurt your career because a team that doesnt like the leadership will be less productive, innovative and collaborative. And who will senior leadership hold responsible for that lackluster performance? You. So, lets look at what youre doing that makes your team think you are such a ghastly boss and the consequences of your actions: All you need is a crown.You believe its your job to give orders, and the team is there to hustle off to do your bidding. Arent they lucky to have a job? They are paid to do what you tell them, right? Then why all the whining and snarky faces? The problem is that your snooty attitude is not only unprofessional, but demeaning. Your loyal subjects will quickly be looking for a way to stage a revolt and wont offer any new ideas or solutions since you act like such a royal pain in the arse. Youre a clock watcher.Youre not watching for 5 p.m. to roll around so you can leave. Youre watching closely to see who leaves on time so that you can make them later feel like a slacker for not staying late. You also make a point of noting if someone takes an extra 10 minutes at lunch, expect people to answer your 11 p.m. emails immediately and generally treat your workers like theyre schoolchildren. Your behavior lets them know that youdont trust themto use their time wisely so they remain guarded in offering any innovative solutions, feeling like theyll be rebuffed by the belittling boss. Your insulting behavior is demoralizing and has them looking for jobs during their lunch hour. You believe coaching and feedback are synonymous with criticism. You believe your job is to point out what an employee is doing wrong. After all, how can the worker improve if you arent pointing out his or her mistakes? While its true that workers need to be told when theyre headed in the wrong direction, they also need to be told when theyre doing something right. If your feedback is nothing more than achance to micromanage, then youre setting up a negative culture that slows down processes and leads to an inefficient team that feels defeated by your constant harping. How To Turn A Job Rejection Into Success It stings when you are not hired after an interview for a job you really wanted. It stings even more when you are sure you are well-qualified for the position and have worked hard on your resume and interview skills. What you do with rejection is going to make a big impact on what happens next. Dont Assume That You Are The Reason For Rejection A company has to conduct interviews even if they already know someone inside the corporation is getting a position. It may be that you are well-qualified for the position, your resume is stellar, and you were impressive during the interview, but the person who is getting the job has the advantage of experience. Getting into a downward spiral of dejection in this case is a mistake. You arent the reason for rejection if someone else is a better choice for the job because it isnt your failure that determined the choice here. Admit What Is Wrong Sometimes you actually are the reason for the rejection. It might be that you didnt seem like a good fit for the company culture, or you didnt look the interviewer in the eye and that came across as sneaky. Maybe you were sloppy or had too much makeup or wore perfume that made their nose itch. Perhaps you checked your cell phone for messages during the interview or some other automatic habit was a problem. The only way to know is to work on honing your interview skills and getting help identifying your blind spots. Be Willing To Change And Learn If you got to the interview stage, your resume and cover letter are probably not the problem. Its not a bad idea to go over them to make sure your qualifications are evident for the next submission, but they were good enough to get you in the door for a face to face talk. Congratulations! An interview is still a good thing even if you didnt get the job. You have the experience of that interview to build on, and the knowledge that you were impressive enough to call in. Now its time to analyze what happened and learn from it. Appreciate all the advice you can gather, apply it analytically without letting your feelings get in the way, and let rejection be the catalyst that makes your success a reality.
